Company background
Vitra was founded in 1950 near Basel by Willi and Erika Fehlbaum, initially producing shopfitting display cases; the company’s name plays on the German word "Vitrine." In 1957 it began manufacturing licensed European editions of furniture by Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson under an agreement with Herman Miller. Vitra remains a family-owned Swiss company, chaired by Rolf Fehlbaum with Nora Fehlbaum as CEO, with subsidiaries in more than fifteen countries. Its Weil am Rhein campus includes buildings by Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid and Herzog & de Meuron, and the independent Vitra Design Museum, founded in 1989. Vitra introduced the Panton Chair in 1967, the first cantilever chair molded from plastic, and states that its major products carry GREENGUARD Gold certification.
