Company background
Steelcase was founded in 1912 as the Metal Office Furniture Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan, by Peter M. Wege, Walter D. Idema, and David D. Hunting, and adopted the Steelcase name in 1954. Long headquartered in Grand Rapids and publicly traded on the NYSE under ticker SCS since 1998, the company became a wholly owned subsidiary of HNI Corporation on December 10, 2025, when the two furniture makers completed a merger creating a combined business with pro forma annual revenue of about $5.8 billion. In 2005, Steelcase became the first office furniture company to earn Cradle to Cradle Product Certification, for its Think chair. Its history includes a 1937 collaboration with architect Frank Lloyd Wright on furniture for the Johnson Wax Headquarters.
