What the company sells

Modular storage, office tables, desks, reception and workplace furniture.

USM was founded in 1885 in Münsingen, Switzerland, by Ulrich Schärer as an ironmongery and metalworking business; the company name derives from his initials and the town's. It remains family-owned, currently led by Alexander Schärer, the fourth generation. In 1961 Paul Schärer Jr. commissioned architect Fritz Haller to design a new factory, and the two went on to develop the modular USM Haller furniture system, patented in 1965, with the first commercial order placed by the Rothschild bank in Paris in 1969. USM now employs more than 500 people, sells in about 70 countries, and holds GREENGUARD certification (since 2007) and Cradle to Cradle certification (since 2018); USM Haller pieces are in the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection.
