Poltrona Frau was founded in 1912 in Turin, Italy, by Sardinian-born Renzo Frau; its name combines the Italian word for armchair with the founder's surname. The company relocated its operations to Tolentino, in Italy's Marche region, in 1963, where manufacturing remains centered today. Haworth, the US-based furniture group, acquired a controlling interest in Poltrona Frau in 2014, and in 2025 folded it into Haworth Lifestyle, a federation of design brands under Haworth Inc. that also includes Cassina, Cappellini and Ralph Lauren Home. Poltrona Frau is known for the Renzo Frau-designed Chester leather armchair and for its Pelle Frau leather-tanning process; its Interiors in Motion atelier supplies leather interiors for automakers including Ferrari, Maserati, Lexus and Bentley.
