Ahrend was founded in 1896 in Amsterdam by Jacobus Ahrend, then under 18, who sold a drawing board and a compass box from his mother's living room. The company received the "Royal" designation in 1996 to mark its centenary and trades today as Royal Ahrend, headquartered in Amsterdam with additional operations in Sint-Oedenrode. Its brand portfolio includes Ahrend, Gispen and Techo, sold across more than 20 countries from six company-owned production sites. In 1953 Ahrend produced Friso Kramer's Revolt chair, an early example of industrial furniture design, and in 2011 it became the first office-furniture company to receive Cradle to Cradle certification.
